Where to see it

The path of totality makes landfall in southern Spain near Cádiz and Málaga, crosses the Strait of Gibraltar into Morocco, then runs east across Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt — passing directly over Luxor — before continuing over Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia. A partial eclipse is visible across most of Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

The longest totality until 2114

Totality lasts up to 6 minutes 23 seconds near Luxor, Egypt. That is exceptional: most total eclipses give two or three minutes. This one is long because the Moon is near perigee (so its disc looks large) while the Earth is near aphelion (so the Sun looks small), and the path runs close to the equator, where the Moon's shadow sweeps across the ground most slowly. No eclipse over land beats it until 2114.

Watch safely

Never look at the Sun without certified eclipse glasses except during the brief moments of totality itself. A partial eclipse can damage your eyes even when most of the Sun is covered.

What happened in 2026

The previous total solar eclipse, on August 12, 2026, crossed Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain near sunset — the first totality visible from mainland Europe since 1999. Totality there lasted little over two minutes and came with the Sun low in the sky, which made for dramatic horizon views where the weather cooperated. The 2027 eclipse is the follow-up, and by almost every measure the better one: nearly three times the duration, a high midday Sun, and a path crossing some of the most reliably cloudless land on Earth.
